When early modern Europeans arrived on primeval shores and attempted to convince people living in nature that the Forest was a wicked abomination and that they were its horrid children doomed from birth to damnation for the crime of being born evil—such people resisted these teachings.

To accept that a tree that fed you, sheltered you and provided bark for your canoe, was intrinsically bad made little sense to the natives. The only converts to the new faith of erasure were those who were, in some cases, outcasts from their own people and seeking a master, but in most cases seduced by steel, iron, guns and rum.
