Scholars of The Iliad—and things such as myself who have plumbed its depths for references to combat mechanics—often sneer at the metaphysics of the poem. But the more I find that a reading of history uncovers ancient truths buried by modern lies and veiled by modern misconceptions, the more I am inclined to take the ancients at their word that the stories of their gods meant something, where not just fables, but symbolic accounts of a higher reality.
